I have absolutely no idea why the rating is so low at the moment (but hopefully when more people see it and rate, the number will go up. This deserves a higher rating. It is an incredible movie and of the best thrillers of 2020.

Yes, it is found footage and when I read that, I was planning on totally hating it and/or shutting it up. But this is different. There is no shaky cam or running with cameras so you can't see anything. There is no "why the heck is so an so using a camera in this scene" because the use of it all works from start to finish and makes sense. So if you are someone like me who despises found footage, rest assured that this is an example of how to do it in an entertaining way that actually helps, not hinders, the narrative.

The story contains hidden cams, cell phone videos, and computer clips of a mother and a son. It tells the story of a single mother who believes she is raising a blossoming psychopath who may be planning to shoot up his high school. And it is chilling. The director brilliantly uses footage of the actor as a baby to show how this teen might have been a psychopath even as a child.

Both actors do a stunning job in this. You feel for the mother but are weary of her because she has some problems of her own as well as trauma from her childhood. You are both scared and somewhat sympathetic of the teen due to the way the actor can perfectly switch between troubled and sweet. Ed Asner has a small role which helps with exposition.

The screenplay makes you believe that this could end one of two ways. You aren't sure for most of the film is the mother is right in her fears or if she is just being paranoid. You get clues along the way but you could make a case that he is just a typical teen acting out. It isn't until the films finale that the truth comes out- and what a finale it is. Edge of your seat type stuff until the very last scene.

I can't say enough positives about this. It is a topical and important film but treats the subject matter well without exploiting mental illness. And it is very entertaining thanks to a great script, awesome direction, and two outstanding performances.

A must see.
